What natural farming means

Natural farming is an approach to growing crops that relies on living, healthy soil and farm-made inputs instead of purchased chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The aim is to keep costs low, protect soil life, and produce food without chemical residues.

Because most inputs are prepared on the farm from locally available material — mainly cow dung, cow urine, plant matter and soil — the approach is often called Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF). In practice "zero budget" means very low external cost, not literally no cost.

The core idea

Conventional farming often feeds the plant directly with soluble chemical fertiliser. Natural farming instead feeds the soil — encouraging the microbes, fungi and earthworms that naturally release nutrients to the crop. Healthy soil holds water better, resists some pests, and stays productive over time.

Four foundational practices

Most natural-farming systems are built around four practices:

  • Jeevamrutham — a microbial culture applied to the soil to boost soil life.
  • Beejamrutham — a seed treatment to protect young seedlings.
  • Mulching (Aacchadana) — covering the soil to hold moisture and build humus.
  • Waaphasa — keeping a good balance of moisture and air in the soil, so less irrigation is needed.

Alongside these, farmers use gentle plant-based sprays for pests and grow several crops together to spread risk.

What natural farming is not

  • It is not simply "doing nothing" — it needs observation, timing and preparation.
  • It is not a guarantee of higher yield or income; results vary by farm.
  • It is not the same as organic certification.

Is it proven?

Natural farming combines traditional practice, farmer experience and a growing but still limited body of research. Some benefits — like lower input costs and improved soil life — are widely reported, while other claims need more study.
